Teacher's Lounge: [1/18]

After class, Mac made a quick stop at Jeff the God of Biscuits to pick up an assortment of bagels and muffins. He opened the door to the Teacher's Lounge and got the coffee going for his fellow teachers.

"We had Christmas here, but that was after...I spent some time in Richmond." She looks at him curiously for a moment, then nods very faintly, "I was in a wreck, right before."

"I'm sorry, we were gone for the entire break, I didn't realize," Gil's expression immediately becomes regretful and a little concerned.

"Are you, may I ask, how have you been?"

She waves her hand dismissively, "I'm doing just fine. Nothing to worry about, I've gotten excellent care. Tell me more about Vegas. Did you and Sara get to see any old friends?"

Grissom pauses for a moment, giving himself perhaps the most bizarre silent pep-talk in history. He can be social. He can. He... no, he can. Just talk.

"We did. Some work colleagues, some friends, my mother flew to Vegas for the holiday. In our former occupation, you tend to become close with the people you work with, so some of those work colleagues are also our friends. A few were free for Christmas, which was... pleasant, and my best friend and her daughter came out to lunch.

It was very nice. Can't say I miss the town too much. The novelty of Vegas wears off quickly when you live there.

Have you ever been? Nevada is a red state, although Clark County has a bit more sense," he says with a smile.

"I've been all over Nevada. I like Vegas in small doses, it's definitely a vacation destination. I can't imagine doing what you did there." She shakes her head, boggled.

"We campaigned harder in the red states, so I know what you mean. People..." and she rambles on and on about fundraisers and fringe groups which I'm totally handwavey with, mistaking his expression for actual interest. Running out of steam, she smiles brightly, "Don't you agree?"

"You probably don't want to know," Gil says good-naturedly. "Like laws and sausages, no one wants to see what really happens behind the scenes to produce the glitz and glamour of Vegas."

He listens to her speak, honestly with varying amounts of interest, but he finds her enthusiasm intriguing and her method of speech engaging and illuminating.

"I don't know if I can say with any honesty I know much about politics, but you certainly have me convinced," he smiles.

She smiles, absolutely delighted. "I've heard that about laws and sausages before. Ironically enough...it was over food too."

Leaning forward and resting her chin on her palm, she grins. "You don't strike me as the most political kind of guy, Gil. But I won't hold it against you."

"Well, thank you," he says with a laugh. "You might be one of the first people who didn't hold it against me."

At the lunch bell ringing, Gil stands up and gives her a polite nod. "Good to see you, CJ. Take care of yourself. If you need anything...you know where my office is."

"You're office crepps me out, Gil." She flashes him that broad smile again, "But I'll take you up on that sometime. It was nice talking to you. See ya."
