Lounge: 24 January

After a bit of negotiation with Biff (i.e. 'Of course, I'm the bloody Doctor, didn't you hear the bloody announcement? Yes, my hair is now red. Is that a PROBLEM?!'), the now ginger Doctor stumbles into the lounge this morning with multiple shopping bags.

They are filled with donuts and Coke and coffee and tea and...junk food, really. From both Britain and America.
And some fruits and vegetables cut up for those who don't fancy that sort of thing. losers With dips.

Ten minutes of fiddling with the sonic screwdriver and a bunch of swearing in multiple languages later, the TV now gets SkyOne, and he settles in to watch some trashy telly.

"I hear that rather often," Dream tells her. "And I teach languages. Classics, creature languages, and world literature. How did you come to work here?"

"I received a letter from the Board of Directors. Really, I can't think how they knew to contact me. I wasn't even looking for a job. Although the timing was fortuitous." Susan smiled, relaxing a tiny amount. "Creature languages? Talking to, to, animals, and the squid I've heard about? That must be fascinating. Have you been teaching for very long?"

"There's a squid in town?" Dream says, a tad surprised. "But, yes. Animals. Spider and Dragon, so far, and I believe I may do a mammal next."

"You could say I've been teaching for a very long time indeed, but this is my first time in a classroom."

Susan bit her lip again, wanting to ask, but not even knowing how to phrase it without sounding profoundly silly. Do you know Aslan?, like some teenager at a club. Brilliant.

"Someone said there was a squid on the loose, but I'm not entirely certain that they weren't joking. I've been warned about gremlins and zombies, as well, and they turned out to be quite truthful, so..." Susan shrugged. "And, well. What did you do, before you were teaching?" An indirect question, which he was perfectly free to avoid.

"Many things. Most recently, I was on a journey to visit some long-lost family; before that, I was ... I suppose the best way to put it is to say I was a caretaker, of a kind."

Dream is rather enjoying this game.

"A caretaker." And what did you take care of? Empty houses, or empty worlds? Susan nodded thoughtfully, saddened a bit by the mention of family. "I'm glad your family was found, after being lost. I haven't travled much myself. This is only my second visit to America, but it's lost none of its charm. Although Fandom is probably too small a place to judge by." There was another question, an innocuous one. "Are you American? I ask only because you don't-- quite -- sound it...."

"I took care of many things. And no, I am not American," Dream says, then sighs. "I suspect you know who I am. Ask your rela question, Dr. Pevensie."

"I took care of many things. And no, I am not American," Dream says, then sighs. "I suspect you know who I am. Ask your real question, Dr. Pevensie."

Oh, she wasn't ready for that yet, she didn't have it framed right in her mind--

"You're not human." Said with the definiteness of someone who's stood in front of Witches and Giants, much less other Powers. "And your name. Forgive me, are you-- exactly what your name says? Are you Morpheus? From legend?"

And if you are, would you know what is real, and what is not?

[identity profile] game-of-you.livejournal.com 2006-01-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dream speaks quietly. "I am not, and ... I suppose it depends on which legend, as they are so often confused. I do rule over dreams."

Dream considers what he sees in her manner. There's a kind of desperate acceptance, as though this was once normal for her. "You have met others like me?"

[identity profile] susanofnarnia.livejournal.com 2006-01-25 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Someone similar. And someone who, I suppose, aspired to be like you." She shuddered, remembering Jadis, and the unending snow enveloping the world. "It's just been so long. I was a child, and I... forgot. If it was even real." Susan looked away. "Sometimes I think I imagined it. But this place, there's so much that reminds me of it, and you, you're like him, only not."

She took a breath. "If you rule dreams-- can you tell me if it was imagination? Or madness? Or if it was real?"

[identity profile] game-of-you.livejournal.com 2006-01-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"It was all of those things," Dream says. "But, I think -- mostly real. Not real in the way this table is real, but real nonetheless."

"Oh," Susan whispered, taking this like a punch in the stomach. Suspicion was one thing but confirmation, unlooked-for, quite another. "Thank you. I--" She frowned, fighting tears. "Excuse me. I think I need to be alone." She got to her feet, unsteadily.

Dream frowns a bit as he watches her go. He had meant only to answer her question, after all.
