Teacher's Lounge [Tuesday, October 3, all day]

Josh gave Biff a friendly wave, then walked into the teacher's lounge with two sheets of paper--one for teachers to sign up as chaperones for the dance on Friday night and another for them to sign up to sit in the dunk tank or agree to get pies thrown at them.

Given the lack of sports teams at the moment, Josh was feeling pretty good about his odds of remaining pie-free.

Josh was very, very dumb sometimes.

He tacked the two lists onto the bulletin board, left out bribes in the form of coffee and doughnuts, then flipped the television to CNN and tried to catch up on the latest Congressional scandal.

Josh grinned and waved. "Hi, you!"

Aly grinned back. "Hi! How are you and the..." she peered at the television "governing body of some sort doing?"

Josh pointed. "That is the House of Representatives," he said. "Like working with the students here, only the House has less emotional maturity."

"Indeed? And they're the reason voting makes you so excited?" she asked.

"The thought of a lot of them being out of jobs in 34 days fills me with an unholy sort of glee, yes," Josh replied.

Aly grinned at him. "That bad are they?"

Josh jerked his head towards the television. "This particular specimen has been making advances towards a 16-year-old page. Hanging's too good for him."

Aly tapped her fingers against the beads of her necklace. "Is there anything that can be done about that? Or is extra-legal action frowned upon here?"

"What kind of extra-legal?" Josh asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Depends honestly," Aly replied. "If he were too influential to be tampered with too much, something rather subtle. A basket of rats left in his room while he's sleeping. Or something to scare him that his wife is plotting against him if he doesn't stop."

"He wasn't married," Josh said thoughtfully, "and he's had to resign in disgrace." He gave Aly a small smile. "Can I get a favor in six months or so when this guy thinks everyone's forgotten about him?"

"Absolutely," Aly replied with a nod. "Though...if he's not married perhaps we can have even more fun then..."

"Did I mention the page was a boy?" Josh asked.

"You did not," Aly replied, still thoughtfully. "Basket of rats it is then unless something better comes up in the meantime."

"Couldn't happen to a nicer guy," Josh said, eyes flashing.

He leaned back with elaborate casualness to look at the sign-up sheet. "So, you're going to the dance, too," he said. "So am I!"

Way to be suave, Josh.

"People seem to find that sort of thing disconcerting. I have no idea why," Aly replied facetiously.

She nodded, quirking a smile. "It seemed to be the thing to do after all."

"Want to maybe wander over together at around the same time?" Josh asked.

"That'd be nice," Aly said. "Wouldn't want to get lost after all."

Josh smiled. "I've been told I look very good in a tuxedo."

"Indeed? I'll look forward to it then," Aly replied.

"I'll pick you up before the dance, then," Josh said with a grin. "I might even throw in dinner if you promise not to dump it on my head."

"I'll accept if you promise to tell me the story that led to that particular caveat." Aly grinned back.

"Three minute dating," Josh said with a groan. "I ended up out with the terrifying woman who runs Fandom who only wanted me for my body."

Josh paused. "And yes, before you ask, really. When I said no, there was duck all over me. Chinese cooked duck, not live, quacking, from the pond ones."

Aly tried not to laugh. She really did. But the picture of cooked duck over his head was just a bit too much.

Josh cracked up, too. "It was a highlight."
