Faculty Lounge, Monday, noonish

Emma had found her office, but as it did not yet have enough white furniture or booze, she'd quickly relocated to the faculty lounge. That might not have white furniture either, but it did have a sofa which she was currently lounging in while reading 'Betty Crocker's Cookbook'. Every once in a while she picked up a red pen and made comments in the margins. A cup of tea was steaming happily on the table beside her, and her fifth attempt at muffins were piled up on a tray. They were probably not poisonous.

"Can't say I have," the Doctor said. "Though I have had my own Marvel Comics series."

"Then you definitely haven't been in my world," Emma agreed. Zomg! The Doctor is a Marvel character!

"Who are they all. Funny names, really," the Doctor said, as he started picking at one of the muffins.

"X-Men," Emma said. She considered how that sounded, and added; "Superheroes."

"Oh, lovely," the Doctor said, finally tasting the muffin. "Are you a superhero as well?"

Emma blinked, a little startled by the concept. "...Yes. Yes, I am."

"Fantastic," the Doctor said. "That's brilliant, that. Saved the world, lately?"

"Yes. And every time the mansion is turned into so much rubble. It's very annoying," Emma informed him. "Are you in the world saving business yourself?"

"That I am," the Doctor said. "Course I don't have a mansion, me. So it never gets reduced to rubble."

"I suppose your insurers never ask pointed questions on whether it's really necessary to be invaded so many times either?" Emma said wistfully.

"Don't need insurers, me," the Doctor said. "What have I got to insure?"

"...You don't have anything to insure?"

"Don't stay in one time or place for long enough for a policy to apply, really," the Doctor said. "Money's rather useless overall."

"...!" said Emma.

"...did I say something wrong?"

"Money!" said Emma, flailing a little. "Useless?"

"Completely. What's the point?"

"But, but, power! Things! Shiny things!"

"...those aren't money," the Doctor said.

"But you use money to get those things! Money is important!"

"Why have the middle man?" the Doctor said. "Besides, power's overrated. I had the ability to bend the universe to my will, and you know what I did? Chucked it in the bin, and made sure no one else could get their hands on it."

Emma stared at the Doctor. What an utterly puzzling man!

The Doctor smiled. "Thanks for the muffin," he said. "I think I'll just pop off back to my time machine and do a bit of cleaning."

It was anyone's guess whether Emma's silence this time was because the Doctor had thanked her for the muffin, or because he was popping back to his time machine.
