Faculty Meeting - Monday Lunchtime

There was free food! There was the dartboard with Jamie Madrox's face on it! There were comfortable chairs! There were too many exclamation marks!

What else would you want?

The last faculty meeting of the academic year is now open.

Josh gave them both a bright smile and a wave. "I just have to give 'em an exam and then some of them leave!" he said excitedly. "Marty Blank will never again tell me about the evil oppression of the government!" He practically vibrated in his seat. "I need a muffin."

Aziraphale blinked at Josh, and completely misconstrued the man's reactions.

"Oh, it'll be all right, my dear!" he exclaimed reassuringly. "Most of them will be staying the summer, or coming back next year. And there's always the special events for alumni. I'm sure that all your students will take care to look you up whenever they can come to visit. Especially Mr Blank."

Josh's face fell. "They're not leaving? Why won't they leave? Do I need a sign like Blair's? 'Move home now! Free food, fewer gremlins!'"

More blinking.

"I, er...why won't who leave? Have we been invaded again?"

Because surely Josh couldn't mean he wanted the students to leave!

"Would you like a cup of tea, Mr Lyman? I find that usually helps cheer me up."

Josh looked at him liked he'd been dropped on his head. "Why. Won't. The. Students. Leave. Already," he enunciated very clearly. "They. Bug. The. Hell. Out. Of. Me."

He smiled. "And I drink coffee, but thank you."

Ah! The pieces finally clicked in Aziraphale's brain, and he chuckled.

"Awfully sorry, my dear, I just...well, I've had such a lovely time with all the students, I hadn't thought about how they can sometimes...be a bit of a handful. But I'm sure that after a couple of weeks, you'll be all ready to start planning for the fall."

He returned Josh's smile, and nodded. "Of course, you Americans do like your coffee, don't you? Here you are," he added, holding out the cup he'd already picked up, which up until that second had been filled with tea. "Blue Mountain is a good kind, isn't it?"

Josh was still sporting the "are you high?" look. "Planning for fall...yeah, no."

He stared at the cup. "How'd you do that?"

Surprisingly, despite the number of times he'd be given the 'are you high?' look, Aziraphale never quite managed to recognize it. So he blithely continued on with his assurances that Josh would be itching to get back into the classroom soon.

"Oh, after you've had a bit of a break, I imagine you'll realize how much you miss them all," he asserted confidently.

"I..." Aziraphale gave the cup a look that said something along the lines of 'oops'. "Oh, you know. Just...er...bit of divine interventions, so to speak. So! Will you be staying at the school over the summer?"

"Pretty sure I won't," Josh said, his mind already reeling though all the people who'd be leaving to cause other teachers heartburn.

Sometimes on completely different planets!

Life was good.

He shrugged and took a sip. "To paraphrase Ben Franklin, 'coffee is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy,'" he said. "Oh, he loves me a lot."

Aziraphale chuckled at the paraphrasing. "You sound exactly like James. I think he would be happy if somehow they could transfuse his blood and replace it with coffee. I've never managed to acquire a taste for it, myself."

Josh's looked changed from "huh?" to "horrified."

"You don't like coffee? How do you survive at this school?"

"Tea, my dear!" Aziraphale replied brightly.

"And, er...the occasional scotch," he admitted, after a moment's pause.

Josh laughed. "If you told me you were mainlining heroin to keep up with these kids, I wouldn't be shocked."

"Oh goodness no!"

Aziraphale laughed as well, although he shook his head vehemently. "No, nothing at all like that. Although...well, as much I enjoy teaching them, I do have to admit that there are times when the students can get a bit out of hand. They're good at heart, of course, but awfully high-spirited. I'm just glad they have someplace like this to come and learn, where they can be themselves."

"The crazy little hellspawn that they are," Josh agreed cheerfully. He held up his cup. "Thanks for the coffee! I'll see you around."

"You're very welcome, my dear." Aziraphale gave Josh a bright smile. "Have a lovely last week of classes."
