Teacher's Lounge: [1/16]

Susan opened up the Teacher's Lounge, and left a selection of muffins and bagels for the teachers. Might as well get acquainted, so they'd know who to send the problem students to, if needed.

She stopped, frowning at a magazine someone had left on the coffee table.

People? Must be American. But who on Earth was J-Lo?

Coughing and spluttering behind his tissues, Daniel's not really aware of anything as he heads into the lounge.

"Are you all right?" Susan asked, looking concerned. "You sound like Dr. Wilson does."

Daniel raised his head and looked up at her. "Please don't tell me you've been here since last semester too," he said, sounding all congested.

"I'm so sorry," she laughed. "No, I'm Susan Pevensie, the new school counselor, this is my first day. You're not the extrovert of the faculty, I take it."

Daniel laughed, and ended up coughing again. "Not in the slightest. I was even accused of being a hermit. Daniel Jackson. I teach anthropology and archaeology."

"Pleasure to meet you. I'd offer to shake your hand, but I am a doctor, so I think I'll reduce the risk of becoming a disease vector, and simply wave." Susan waved, her face completely solemn.

Daniel nodded, before blowing his nose again. "A wise thing indeed. It's why I've not offered my hand before now too. Doctor of the wrong type in this case, but I one of my closest friends was. Um. Is a medical doctor, so she's got me well trained by now!"

Laughing, Susan took one of the blueberry muffins, and took a bite, before offering Daniel a bagel. "Here. Sustenance for the suffering. Is your friend a resident here on the Island? I've only met Dr. Wilson and Dr. House so far, it'd be nice to compare notes with another female doctor."

Daniel took the offered bagel with a smile. "Thank you," he said. "Actually, she's someone I used to work with in Colorado. Now she's a student here instead."

"Oh," Susan said, a little disappinted. "Too bad, then. Perhaps I can meet her sometime in the future, then. Although if I knew that, there would be *so* much trouble. Tell me, are you living on-campus? I've just rented a flat, but I'm wondering if it was the best choice."

Daniel decided that it was easier just to nod. Although then he really regreted that. "Perhaps," he said. "We'll just have to make sure you don't find that out zomg!secret I'm not, no. I'm in the Mauvaise Chance apartments, out by the park."

"Oh, so am I! I'm on the third floor, it's a lovely suite. Although our landlord is a little odd. And not just because of the ears." Susan shook her head.

"I'm on the first? One straight above the ground floor," Daniel said, sneezing again. "I think it's mostly faculty there.

Wait. We have a landlord? I've never actually met him..."

"I suppose I should say I'm on the fourth, but the apartment is number 3, and Mr. Quark kept referring to it as the third floor. Is it mostly faculty? That's nice. At least if I go looking for milk or staples, someone shan't think I'm too forward, knocking on doors." Susan smiled.

"Yes, we have a landlord. I'm not quite sure what species he is. I wasn't sure if it was polite to ask or not." She cocked her head. "How did you rent your apartment, if you never met our landlord?"

Daniel laughed. "Ah, yes. You have a different naming system for floors in Britain, don't you," he said. "I'm sure you'll get used to the Americanisms soon enough."

He rubbed his head and looked slightly embarrassed. "Ah. You see, I don't actually know. I had a, well, we shall say, an incident last semester where I was adopted by someone else I suffered a head-injury, and I'm still a bit fuzzy on some of the details of the early weeks."

"I'm sure I will." Susan held up the copy of People. "And on that subject, what is your opinion of Jennifer Lopez?"

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to catch you off-guard." She frowned. "I hope you're seeing someone for help with the side-effects?"

"She's um, a singer who tries to be an actress. Or an actress who tries to be a singer. Either one. I'm not sure," he said. He took a closer look. "And the last woman I saw with that much eye make-up on was an Egyptian goddess."

He waved his hand slightly dismissively. "Unfortunately, head injuries and I are old friends," he said flippantly. And sneezed again.

"She does seem to be attempting to look like a temple dancer, doesn't she? Not just me, then." Susan hadn't wanted to comment on the woman's dress, either, but really. Clothes that skin tight were more appropriate to burlesque shows. "Are you an Egyptologist, then? And I'm sorry to hear that you're so accident-prone."

Thou shalt *not* analyze thy colleagues: Susan's first rule of professional survival. She couldn't help wondering about Daniel's flippancy, though. That seemed to take male dismissal of medical treatment a *bit* far.

Daniel remembered not to shake his head this time. "No, not just you," he agreed. "And yes, I am. Well, that's one of my PhDs at least."

He chuckled. "Accident prone, yes, that's me, I'm afraid. I also tend to die a lot too, but we won't go there"

"You have more than one? I assume Anthropology as well as Archaeology. I'm a psychologist as well as a psychiatrist, actully. This school does hire very qualified staff, then." Which was oddly reassuring. She smiled at the label of accident prone, then said, "Well, if you're here with such a cold, I suspect you push yourself too hard. Dr. Wilson called in dead, and he didn't sound much better than you do."

"You'd assume correctly," Daniel smiled, before blowing his nose. "And I think we're all pretty qualified here. Much more than one would expect from a normal high school, but then again? Anything but that.

I've heard that before as well. We'll see how today's class goes, and I'll perhaps considering passing tomorrow's to my TA as mun will be 300 miles away from the computer WOE."

"True. Any place with a librarian who's an ape, and little girls who have delivery services conducted via broomstick, probably needs as many qualifications as it can beg." Susan cocked her head. "I do hope you feel better soon."

Daniel blinked. "The new librarian's an ape? I completely missed that. Of course, I miss lots of things, but still," he grinned.

"And thank you." He sneezed yet again, and groaned. "I honestly do too. I thought it was allergies playing up... clearly not!"

"Smashing! Now I've passed along the confusion to someone else. I'm getting acclimated already," she said, laughing. "Honestly, take care of yourself this week, Daniel. It's too early in the term for you to be exhausted already."

"I will, Doctor," he said, grinning. "I probably just need to rest and drink lots of fluids like a good boy."
