Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

"Do you mind if I ask where you're from?" Ellie said. "With that kind of class, I'm guess it's not from the here and now."

"Not from here, no. I'm from a system beyond M8," she replied. "As for the now? That I haven't quite figured out yet. The calendar I'm accustomed to is, well, a bit different."

Ellie could barely contain her excitement. "Would you mind if I interviewed you some day?" she asked. "It was always my life's goal to meet life from the stars and now I'm surrounded by it and it's almost so overwhelming. I'd love to ask you some questions about your own world."

Laura swallowed and forced a smile. The only person who could have known it was forced, however, was now light years away. "I'd be happy to tell you what I can," she replied. "As an astronomer, I can imagine it's amazing to meet so many people from so many different galaxies."

"So many people don't believe in life beyond this planet," Ellie said, completely obviously to Laura's discomfort. "It's an awfully selfish point of view. There's so much space out there, why wouldn't we share it?" She shook her head with a laugh. "Even before coming here I met life from another world, but no one believed me. I don't care. It's enough that I know. But I'll prove it to others in as much as I can."

"So the attitude on the island here isn't exactly common to the planet as a whole? I haven't had time to explore beyond the causeway just yet."

Ellie shook her head. "No. If you left the island and tried to claim you were from another world, people would think you're crazy. My colleagues though I was crazy for spending all my time trying to prove there was life in outer space."

"I'll definitely mark that down as something not to do." She smiled. "At least until your hypotheses are publicly proven."

"Your evolution seems to have followed the same lines as ours," Ellie said, "so you'll have no trouble passing. You look just as human as me."

"Well, our history, our scriptures -- suggest that members of our thirteeth tribe traveled and settled here. Maybe that explains the similarities."

"Really?" Ellie said. "You think they mingled with what life was already developing on Earth? What about their technology? If they could travel the stars, what happened to it when they got here?"

She chuckled ruefully. "I'm sorry. I'm so full of questions."

Laura smiled. "It's okay. And to be honest, they're questions I have, as well. I'm digging through a lot of the ancient histories to see if I can find answers. So far, I haven't found anything promising, but there's just so much!"

"If you ever find any definitive evidence, I'd love to see it," Ellie said. "And if ever there was a place to find out, I think Fandom would be it."

"I'll be happy to share... if I ever find it." She shook her head. "Well, I believe I should go circulate a bit -- especially if I want to get back to my lesson for next week. It was very nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, too," Ellie said. "I hope we have the chance to talk again."

"I'm sure we will." Laura waved, and then began moving away from the food.
