Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

"I'm just guessing on this, but you're not from around here, are you?"

Laura chuckled. "No, I'm not -- though our history suggests we descended from the same ancestors. It's one of the reasons I'm here, actually. To see what life on Earth is all about."

"That's very interesting. I wonder how you compare to us at the celluar level?" Abby thought aloud.

"I hate to tell you this, but Fandom Island isn't the most representative slice of Earth. Normal Earth life is...much weirder."

At this, she raised her brows. "Wierder? Is that possible? While I haven't been off the island yet, I gathered that demons, vampires, witches, and zombies weren't exactly commonplace beyond here. They're certainly the things of legend at home."

"Okay, the people here are weirder than everywhere else. But the inhabitants of this island get on a lot better with each other and a lot less fuss than the rest of the planet." Abby shrugged.

The former president gave a wry grin. "Nice to know there's continuity."

"Problems where you come from as well?" Abby shook her head. "I guess that shoots the idea that aliens all live in a uptopian environment full of shiny robots."

"We definitely didn't live in a utopia, and the shiny robots have turned out to be part of the problems." She sipped her coffee. She was definitely going to have to do a little more research on popular culture...in addition to her other studies.

"Part of the problem?" Abby shuddered. "Please don't tell me you've solved the problem by eschewing all technology because that would be very sad."

"No, we understand that technology is necessary to maintain a standard of living," Roslin replied thoughtfully, "but we have certainly taken a few steps back and begun to rethink how we approach it -- or apply it."

"That seems wise." Abby said. "How does Earth compare technology-wise to where you're from?"

Laura furrowed her brow. "There seems to be some difference, although I'm continually surprised at how similar everything really is. So, while our computers seem fairly similar, we're actually capable of faster-than-light travel." She gave a rueful smile. "I'm afraid I wouldn't know much about the differences in the programming languages; they're not my area of expertise."

"Faster-than-light." Abby breathed. "You didn't happen to bring any examples of your technology with you, did you? Something I can look over?"

Roslin hesitated. Sharing technology was not something she was sure she was prepared to do. Thankfully, she didn't have to lie. "Not this trip, I'm afraid. I've been exchanging letters with a friend, still at home. I'll see if there's anything he would suggest sharing."

"That's great!" Abby smiled. "I'd be interested to see the differences."

"I think I'd be interested in that, too."
