Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

Laura nodded. "A pleasure to meet you, Miss Poppins. I'm Laura Roslin, currently teaching interstellar relations."

"Oh how lovely. Would that be relations between the stars themselves or the people who live around them?"

If she thought it was a strange question, Roslin didn't show it. "The people who live among them -- or rather, the nations that have been formed among them."

"An excellent class for future leaders I'm certain." Mary nodded.

"I'd like to think so. But, as a schoolteacher, I suppose I'd like all my students to emerge as leaders." She smiled.

"Have you always been a teacher then?"

Laura sipped her coffee, then nodded. "Most of my life. Even when I wasn't teaching, I was working to improve the system, or working with the teachers' unions. What about you? Have you always been a teacher?"

"Not exactly." Mary said sipping her tea. "I normally find employment as a Nanny."

"So you're accustomed to being around children, at least." Laura gave a chuckle. "Though, I imagine, they're usually a bit younger."

"Oh yes, quite a bit younger." Mary nodded over to their hostess and her son. "More along the lines of darling Bucky over there."

Roslin followed her gaze, seeing Bucky and Lorelai for herself. The image of mother and son immediately triggered thoughts of Maya and Isis back on New Caprica. "He really is darling," she said. "But definitely a little too young to attend classes. Do you assist with home schooling when you work with a family?"

"I have done on occasion." Mary nodded. "Though it's customary in my experience that a child who reaches schooling age moves out of the nursery."

"Ah, but there's so much to learn, even when they're that small -- everything begins there."

"I couldn't agree more." Mary smiled. "Though it is a teaching of a different sort."

"Very different. But it lays the foundation for everything to come. It can even shape their attitudes about learning." Laura chuckled, suddenly a bit self-conscious. "I'm sorry. Early education was one of my pet projects."

"No need to apologize." Mary said holding her hand up. "It's an interest I share."

"It's been such a long time since I've been able to discuss this sort of thing with anyone," Roslin said, a wistful note in her voice. "Well, with anyone who has more than a superficial interest. I've spent the past few years in politics, and it's difficult to be a schoolteacher and a politician."

"Your choice of subject matter permits you to do both in a way I should think."

"In a way. But being a politician requires a bit more..." -- she paused, searching out the right word -- "fortitude. And detachment."

Mary nodded.

"I can see how those might be qualities that would be useful in a politician."
