Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

[wait for ocd have at it!]

"Really?" Well, that was interesting, because he hadn't thought Earth had any sister colonies. Of course, it wasn't like he'd necessarily know that. Maybe there were, and he didn't know because he was assigned to this planet...

None of which Roslin really needed to witness him trying to figure out.

"You'll have to forgive me if I seem rather ignorant. Where -- when? -- I'm from, they really haven't figured out all that much about space travel. I'd never even put much thought into it until I came here. Although, I'd also never met any blue furry people before I came here, either."

"Blue furry...? I've met the man with the green skin..." Roslin glanced about, looking for Lorne. She shook her head. "And I'm learning that there must be some sort of time distortion between here and home. I can't imagine that Earth would actually be all that far behind us, technologically."

"I don't believe he's here any longer. But yes...there are quite a few people here in Fandom who don't fit my...world's definition of 'usual'. And you're right about the time distortion. Technically, I'm from about a year in the future. And some of the students I know, the ones who aren't from someplace different altogether, are from past and future times. It is a bit strange..."

He cocked his head at Roslin, trying to decide whether or not she really wanted to hear his theory on what Fandom was. "I think...we're outside of time, in way. While we're here, I mean."

She narrowed her eyes, folding her arms across her chest as she mulled that one over. "I suppose anything is possible. It would certainly explain why I'm seeing teenage versions of people I've worked with recently -- as adults."

"Oh yes! That's certainly been a strange one, hasn't it? And confusing for the students as well, I'm quite sure." Aziraphale shook his and gave Roslin a wry smile.

"I have a theory, that we're all here for a specific purpose. To learn something, I think, although I expect none of us probably knows what that is."

"I suspect you're probably right." Laura glanced briefly at the floor, then back up to Aziraphale. "No one ever said the road to enlightenment was an easy path."

It sounded as though Roslin had first-hand experience with that idea, and Aziraphale smiled sympathetically. "No...no, I rather think that the road to enlightenment is probably not so much a road as it is a sort of very high rocky hill one has to climb. But the view will be beautiful once you get to the top."

"Provided you live to see it." She shook her head, eventually giving an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry. I'm not usually this morose on first meeting."

"It's quite all right, my dear," he said gently. "I really do understand, I remember what it was like when I first came here. I had no idea what to think, or even really what to believe."

He was still having a bit of trouble with that, truth be told, since his chat with Jesse.

"I realize that we've only just met, but if you think you might like someone to talk to sometime, my door is always open. And," he added, smiling as he held up his mug. "I always have tea."

"I appreciate the offer. Maybe I will take you up on it at some point." She glanced at her discarded mug, still waiting by the stack of other discarded dishes. "I haven't actually tried the tea yet."

"I can promise you whatever sort of tea you like best," Aziraphale replied. "I might even be convinced to serve coffee, if that's your preference. Although I will have to admit to doing my best to convert people. I've even got James halfway there, or would if I didn't think he actually needed the coffee to live."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] hera-rises.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't sure who James was, and she wasn't sure she wanted to ask. "I'm just thankful to have a close facimilie." She shook her head. "I hadn't had a decent cup of coffee in...well, months. And the coffee lasted longer than the tea."

"Well, there's tea available in my office any time you might feel you need a cup, and some company to go along with it."

Aziraphale could tell there was a great deal on Roslin's mind, and most of it not related to her job at the school. Unfortunately, a faculty gathering wasn't the best place to try and talk about it, and he didn't want to make her more uncomfortable by pushing at the topic.

"It's really been a pleasure meeting you, Miss Roslin. I hope to talk with you again sometime."
