Faculty Meeting - Monday Before Classes

There was food. There was coffee. Heck, there was even tea for those who couldn't handle the good stuff. There were also chairs littered throughout the room, a portable whiteboard with different-colored markers off to one side and Biff, of course, keeping guard.

Hades is here even though he got shot last night (he's fine, thanks for asking). Why aren't you?

"Long weekend. I spent most of it packing up to leave." Susan smiled ruefully, then nodded to Sakura. "Susan Pevensie, soon to be the former School Counselor."

"Leaving? At the beginning of the semester?" asked Sakura. "That's interesting timing."

Then, because she really did remember to be polite sometimes, she added, "Sakura Nishihori, Mythical Artifacts teacher."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sakura." Susan sighed, then shrugged. "It's the first opportunity I've had to return to my home in-- many many years. I may not be able to return for a long time. I daren't pass it up."

"Understandable, I suppose," Sakura said carefully. She couldn't exactly sympathize, having run away from home herself, but at least intellectually she could comprehend that sort of sentiment. "How long were you away?"

"Over sixteen years. No, even longer-- but sixteen years since I saw the rest of my family." Susan sighed, and pressed a hand to her face. "I'm going to miss this Island a great deal. It's been the closest thing to home since I left it." She shook her head. "What will you be teaching?"

"My goal with the Artifacts course is to teach the students that some of the things they read about in stories are real," Sakura answered with a purposeful nod. "And to appreciate the . . . magic, I suppose you could call it, that exists in them."

"A very important goal, I think. If I'd had a class like that when I was a teen, I might have made very different choices," Susan said, thinking. "But then, that's why I wanted to be a Counselor here."

"To help teenagers make the right choices?" Sakura considered for a moment. "Purely out of curiosity, would you have, in theory, ever agreed that it would be advisable for someone to escape a comfortable home life in search of something more suitable?"

"I would think that if she were using the word 'escape', that the comfortable home might be pleasant, but probably didn't provide her with enough scope," Susan said, consideringly. "And suitable is up to the individual, really."

Finally, Sakura thought, someone who might not look at me in disbelief if she knew what I walked away from.

"I'm glad you agree," was all she said out loud. Then, changing the subject before it got too obviously personal, she asked, "Do you have any plans for what you'll do once you get home?"

"Re-assume the responsibilities I had before I left, I believe." Susan looked introspective. "I didn't set them aside entirely by choice. And I think I'm better suited to them now, with the education I have, than I was before. Administrative work, government relief." She smiled a little. "And probably some counseling."

Sakura really did smile at that. She always appreciated someone with a sense of responsibility and duty. "I wish you luck," she said, extending a hand to Susan. "Chief -- Akashi -- is fond of saying that everyone has a treasure that belongs only to them. I hope you find yours, Susan Pevensie."

Susan took her hand and shook it, smiling wide. "Thank you, Sakura. I think I will. And the very best of luck to you in your classes and time here. I hope you find them a treasure that you can enjoy, if not keep."
