Faculty Meeting - Tuesday Before Classes

The food was there, the guard teddy bear was there, the coffee was there. Everything was set. Hades was fidgeting.

"So, uh," he rubbed the back of his neck. "Here's the thing. The school board is coming to visit next week and they can shut us down if we don't show 'em a good time, so try not to be your usual charming selves."

"Probably a good plan," Josh agreed. "How does he get his hair to do that?"

"He's a god so doesn't feel the need for product?" Aly suggested. "We're just lucky he doesn't feel the need for an overindulgence in jewelry as well."

"That normally a concern?" Josh asked. "Our gods don't tend to, you know, show up."

Aly snickered. "At least for one god in particular. Made a bet once where the prize was a rather gaudy jeweled necklace." She grinned at Josh. "It's a serious thing."

"The black one?" Josh asked.

He paid attention.

Sometimes.

"It was multicoloured and sparkly," Aly replied. "Just the thing a god would use in a bet with crows."

"Because gods often make bets with crows," Josh agreed. "Wait. Huh?"

Aly grinned at him. "You're cute when you're completely confused."

"I'm cute all the time," Josh replied. "Care to explain anyway?"

"Kyprioth, the Trickster, was dethroned from his seat in the Copper Isles a few hundred years ago," Aly said. "When he decided the time was right for him to get his throne back, he made a bet with all the crows of the Isles - cause what better bird for a Trickster to use - that if they helped put a queen back on the throne and drive out his sister and brother as Gods of the Isles." She grinned. "The crows collected their debt."

"Which was the sparkly necklace thing?" Josh asked, trying to keep up.

Aly nodded. "Exactly. Doesn't seem like much of a great bargain, does it?"

"Not so much," Josh agreed. "But I'm not a crow. I think they needed better negotiators."

"Glad to hear it," Aly said. "That you're not a crow, I mean."

Josh raised an eyebrow. "That would have been a deal-breaker?"

She looked innocent. "No?"

"I think it disturbs me you've actually given this thought."

Aly looked mischievous. "I've met some very nice crows in my lifetime."

Josh blinked. "But still...crows."

"You've talked to Alanna's cat, haven't you?" she asked. "Faithful has a fascination with shrimp, and crows feel the need to try to preen your hair."

"But not with shrimp, right?" Josh checked.

She giggled. "No."

Josh leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Never hurts to ask," he said, smiling.

"Well, unless you were hoping to meet a crow with shrimply intentions and now I've destroyed that idea," Aly told him as she leaned into him slightly.

Hades stared at them both as they talked.
