Teacher's Lounge [Period 2 and on]

After her workshop, Veronica dropped by the teacher's lounge and put on a pot of coffee. She also had a tray of brownies she had baked over the weekend.

She sat at one of the tables and started working on her lesson for next week.

Max flashed a flirtatious sort of smile. "I think I would have remembered if we had."

"I'm quite certain I would have," Veronica agreed. "I'm guessing you're one of the newly arrived teachers?"

"An excellent deduction," Max laughed. "And I'm guessing you're one of those teachers who actually knows her way around this place?"

"I do," Veronica admitted. "Though more from a student perspective. I graduated from here a few years ago and am just back to teach for the summer."

"Wow. You must really like the place then, huh?" He looked around. "I suppose I can see that, though."

She shrugged. "It's a fun place. And I needed a summer job. I'll be starting my senior year of college in the fall."

"College?" Max asked as his head cocked at a slight angle to study her curiously.

Veronica nodded. "Yeah, I'm getting my degree in Criminal Justice."

He shook his head ruefully. "This must be another of those different world sorts of things. Because I think I'm lost."

"Oh! Sorry," she looked embarrassed. "College is higher education in this world. It's what a lot of high school students do after they graduate before they join the workforce."

"Aha," Max nodded in understanding. "It sounds much like the Academy back home. Though I suppose it would be a stretch to suggest that 'a lot' of students attend there..."

"Where is home?" Veronica asked. "And what do most students do after high school?"

"I'm from a place called Alera." He flashed a smile that suggested he'd be surprised if she heard of it. "And we don't really have high school."

"Never heard of it," she confirmed. "What kind of schooling do you have?"

If he'd been in Fandom longer Max certainly would have picked up the ever-so-useful phrase 'the school of hard knocks'. But he hadn't, so his answer was a shrug. "Most people can't afford any sort of formal schooling. They end up apprenticed or something similar."

Veronica nodded. "So how did you end up here teaching?"

"Well, the Captain found out about this place, and I don't really know how he did that, but he decided it was worth sending someone out here to get a feel for it. Meet some people." Figure out if it could be used to evacuate civilians to or through if the war went poorly.

"Captain of what?" she asked.

"The First Aleran." After a moment Max remembered that that probably didn't mean anything to her. "It's a legion. A military unit."

Veronica nodded. "Militaries do seem to be constant in any universe."

"Wherever there are people, they'll want to fight each other, I guess." This didn't actually seem to bother Max too much.

"Yep, seems that way," she agreed. "So what do you think of Fandom?"

"I've only been here about a week, but I have to say I really rather like the place. It's peaceful, and interesting, and," he paused to shoot Veronica an appreciative look, "it's full of hot interesting women people."

Veronica certainly recognized that look and she smiled. "There are definitely a lot of interesting people here."

"What about you? I mean, obviously you liked it enough to come back after being a student, but..."
