Staff Meeting, Friday Afternoon (after classes)

The tables and chairs in the lounge had been arranged for the faculty meeting, and there were plenty of snacks and drinks for everyone. There might have been a higher percentage of things that tasted like pumpkin and gingerbread than usual, but that was unavoidable at this time of the year.

Eat, drink, mingle, etc.

Drake was prepared to mingle so much that other demons would facepalm at him.

Where there was coffee, there was Ghanima, perfectly happy to indulge the lesser of her addictions while she waited for the meeting to start.

Anakin had a giant cup of coffee in his hands. Now that Rory was allowed to drink it again, he didn't feel badly at all about indulging.

Tyler had some coffee and was still pony-free.

Colette was there and not too grumpy today.

Really.

Summer helped herself to some coffee, glad for the caffeine boost.

"I wanted to take a chance to thank those of you who took down the...creatures earlier this week," Zoe said. Sentient vegetables would never sound as threatening as they might have actually been. "I'm sure some folks were worried, and it's always nice to have a reminder that the students and residents of the island are safe here. Don't forget that we're just a few weeks away from Thanksgiving, and if you don't know what that is, feel free to ask and I'll try to explain it. All you really need to know is that there won't be classes, so everyone has time to go home if you wish. If you'd like to stay, there will be a dinner here, I believe. And that's all I have for you. Is there anything else we should discuss?"

If there's anything else people want to bring up.

"I think it's important to find out just who on the staff has Facebook and plays Farmville," Drake said solemnly. "Neighborly support and all."

"I have it, but not under this name," Tyler said. "Do I need to get Farmville?"

"Only if you have no qualms about it sucking your life away," Drake grinned. "But you get non-carnivorous fruit trees and cute little animals. And you can make your neighbor's crops sparkle!"

Tyler considered this.

Dubiously.

"It would be better without sparkling and with carnivorous fruit trees."

"You say that now," Drake said, "but when the fruits of the world decide to follow in the footsteps of their veggie brothers' uprising, you'll sing a different tune."

"I kind of liked having something to fight," Tyler said idly. "It was like ... living inside a video game."

"Particularly when the mushrooms came a-calling," Drake agreed. "But I didn't find any gold coins."

"We should demand that for the next attack," Tyler said. "Beat something up, get gold coins."

"Think Zoe can pull some strings and get that arranged for us?" Drake said. "It's only fair, I have to agree."

Tyler laughed. "You should ask her. She might say it's up to Mayor Summers."

She looked a little exhausted, but she was around before and after the meeting.

Anakin loitered around after the meeting, waiting for the rest of the staff to leave before he approached Zoe.

"I caught up on radio today," he said, meeting her eyes. "Who did we lose?"

"Peter Petrelli," she replied, sighing. "You worked with him, didn't you?"

"Yes," Anakin said, pain and guilt--maybe he hadn't taught well enough--flashing momentarily in his eyes. "Sam's taking it hard, huh."

Anyone who was asking around about bringing back the dead was taking it hard, in Anakin's view.

"Very much so. John and I have been trying to comfort him as much as we can but...his grief is running very deep." She frowned softly. "I'm sorry for you as well."

Anakin waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. "I'll be fine. This is, sadly, not the first time I've lost a student."

He paused, for a moment showing some uncertainty. "I know both you and John are more than acquainted with this kind of pain," he said quietly, "but if Sam's looking to talk to someone who isn't family...my door's open."

"I think that would be very helpful," Zoe said. "There's only so many times we can tell him we understand before it starts sounding trite. You have a different way with people." It just so happened that this time, that was a good different.

Anakin's lips quirked up. "That's the most diplomatic way I've ever heard it phrased," he said.

"Diplomacy is a skill I can pull out when needed," Zoe said. "Still, thank you for the offer."

"Of course," Anakin said. "Besides, I'm not related. He can yell all he wants and not feel badly about it."

"That might be good for him, actually. He's been very quiet, and I know that the anger can't be far behind," Zoe said. "I don't want him holding it in though. He deserves to be angry."

"And yelling or hitting someone who can hit back is much better than, say, searching for someone to bring the dead back to life," Anakin said.

Zoe sighed. "Yes, we're going to have a long discussion with him about that," she said. "I don't like finding out what my stepsons are up to via the radio, but I suppose it's a benefit to being here."

"At least he's not trying to be sneaky about it," Anakin said. "That can only be a good thing. If he was really serious, he'd be asking questions more covertly."

"I think he's grasping at straws right now to fix this," Zoe said. "I certainly understand that. I just wish what he was grasping at wasn't so dangerous."

"Learning that some things can't be fixed is one of the truly painful lessons in life," Anakin added.

"I know, I just wish he hadn't had to learn that lesson so soon," Zoe replied. "It's a lesson for adults. Preferably those in old age."

"We don't exactly teach normal students," Anakin said sadly.

"Their lives don't all have to involve tragedy," Zoe said. "Especially when they've already had their fair share."

"I'd give a lot to have it work that way," Anakin replied, eyes haunted as he thought about his children and grandkids. "New rule. Nothing gets to happen to Juliet and Grace."

"Oh, I like that rule a lot," Zoe said. "Their lives should be infinitely easier than those that came before them."

"I keep trying to get Rory to go along with a giant plastic hamster ball for the little girl," Anakin said. "So far, it's gotten turned down."

He was still hopeful.

Oh god it's Friday the 13th. I don't know whether to hide or have a movie marathon!
