Staff Meeting, Friday Afternoon (after classes)

The teacher's lounge had been relatively unharmed by the gremlins, which made it much easier for Zoe to get everything set up for the meeting than she'd been expecting. Today was a day of pies when it came to the baked goods, and there was the usual assortment of hot and cold drinks as well. Before she unlocked the door, Zoe made sure to check the room for gremlins one last time. She wasn't really up for taking chances today.

"Apparently that was all Grams' doing," Paige said. "My sisters have a different father and I was actually adopted as a baby."

"Oh, wow," Jim said. "As stories go, that definitely beats trying to survive the pranks your brothers come up with."

"My parents had this whole forbidden love thing going on," Paige explained. "Long story. How many siblings do you have?"

"Two brothers, one sister," Jim said. "My sister's the only one who got an interesting name, though. 'Larissa.' Beats 'Jim,' 'Pete,' and 'Tom' by a mile."

"Yeah, you guys did end up with super normal names," Paige agreed. "Where do you fall in the birth order?"

"~~I have no idea. The internet is useless!~~ Second oldest," Jim said. "It has all the benefits of being a middle child AND an older brother."

~~Oops sorry!~~ Paige smirked a little. "Yeah, I'm the baby so I really had to prove myself. Of course, I grew up as an only child."

"Do you find yourself acting more like the baby, or are you just completely independent?" Jim asked.

"Well, I tried the independent thing," Paige admitted. "But that didn't work out so well. I'm not sure if I act like the baby, but there are still times when I feel like my sisters treat me like one."

"Well, that's their job," Jim said.

"Of course you're going to say that, you have younger siblings," Paige teased.

"You see, that's my job," Jim said. "Well, that and teaching, but I got that out of the way already today."

"How's your class going?" Paige asked. "Any of your kids get caught up in that crazy this weekend? I had a few who were apparently out fighting."

"I'm not sure, but my TA was a penguin today," Jim said. "I don't think that had anything to do with the weekend."

"A penguin? And he or she actually showed up for class?"

That was pretty impressive, in her opinion.

"He's a dedicated kid," Jim said. He didn't fully believe that, but he didn't really have any way to prove otherwise.

"Obviously," Paige said.

"Either that or he just wanted to see how many people would be thrown by a penguin taking the class," Jim mused.

Paige laughed. "Somehow, given my limited knowledge of teenage boys, I'm thinking that's more likely."

"It's what I would have done if I were his age. And a penguin," Jim said. "I probably would have tried to convince somebody to carry me around in a wagon, though."

"Okay, if you ever get turned into a small animal, I promise to pull you around in a wagon," Paige said, because that was a great mental image.

"I'm going to hold you to that," Jim said.

"As long as someone tells me," Paige promised.
