Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

[wait for ocd have at it!]

Generally used to being the one hosting rather than mingling, Aziraphale took his mug of tea and found a quite corner to stand in, where he could people-watch without being too obtrusive.

Abby leaned against the wall next to Aziraphale. "Do you like tomatoes?"

Well, that was certainly an interesting -- and rather Abby -- way of beginning a conversation.

"Yes, my dear, I do. Are we playing a game?" he asked, with a teashing grin.

"We could, although that wasn't what I was planning." Abby thought for a moment and smiled. "Your turn then!"

With a laugh, Aziraphale answered, "All right, let me think. Do you like...avocados?"

[ooc: "teashing" Look, I made a new word. *headdesks*]

"Only when they are mushed up into guacamole." Abby said with a scrunch of her nose. "Otherwise they are gross."

"What's your general feeling on corn?"

[ooc: *pats you* I didn't even notice it till you pointed it out. Friday = NoBrainDay!]

"I much prefer them when they're not purple and taking over the house as well," Aziraphale agreed.

"Corn, you say? I expect you're referring to the American definition of corn. As in 'corn on the cob'? I rather like it, although I prefer it prepared in something, and not just straight off the ear. Rather messy to eat that way. So...what about leeks?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] cheerfulgoth.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"What are the non-American definitions of corn?" Abby asked. "I don't like it off the ear either, but that's mostly because corn-on-the-cob is very hard to fix in a microwave."

"Leeks are pretentious onions really."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"In Europe, 'corn' refers to most types of grain, not just to American maize. So wheat and oats are a type of corn, to them."

He smiled at Abby's definition of leeks. "Perhaps it's because there aren't any saints' days associated with onions, so leeks have developed an overblown self-image."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] cheerfulgoth.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's just silly." Abby rolled her eyes. "Europeans."

"I'm not sure I understand the point of leeks. If they can't be breaded and made into rings...then what?" Abby leaned forward and looked around. "I should be quieter, Dr. Wilson probably has some fabulous leek recipe that I'm malinging right now."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"James has a wonderful recipe for just about anything. And I'll bet if I mentioned your views on leeks, he'd whip something up for you that would change your mind right away."

Aziraphale gave her a mischievous look. "Have you ever had gravlax?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] cheerfulgoth.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Normally I'd blanch, but Dr. Wilson could cook cardboard and I'd eat it with a smile on my face." Abby smiled.

"Uh...no. Is it a person?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Aziraphale agreed wholeheartedly with Abby's assessment of Wilson's cooking. Although, it was possible he might have been just a wee bit biased.

"Er...no, not a person. It's a food. Made with salmon."

He thought he'd wait and see her reaction to that much information before continuing. Because starting out with 'it's made with raw salmon didn't usually work as well.

[identity profile] cheerfulgoth.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Doesn't gravlax sound like it should be the name of a planet on a sci-fi show?" Abby frowned. "Captains Log, we landed on Gravlax 7 today and discovered the natives look a lot like salmon."

"Does it taste good?"

"Ah we meet again."

Re: Meet & Mingle

Aziraphale smiled at Mary. "It's lovely to see you again, my dear. Are you enjoying being part of the Fandom faculty?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] spit-spot.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very much so yes." Mary nodded. "I did not think I would be content with having children in my care for a short while each week, but there are quite a lot of them so I think it shall work out."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm pleased to hear it. I have to say, I never fancied myself a teacher, but it does seem to be rather more appealing than I'd expected it to be. Have you had a chance to see much of the town?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] spit-spot.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I walk from my new home on Apocalypse Avenue to the school of course, and I've seen the coffee shop, as well as the general store, and a lovely little cafe. But I'm afraid that's all."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do be sure to walk through the park sometime," Aziraphale suggested. "It's very nice, even has a proper duck pond. And I understand there's a bookshop and a record store, although I'm afraid I've been terribly remiss and haven't yet visited either. If you go by the bookshop when Miss Lang is working, though, tell her that Aziraphale sent you. She's...a friend of mine, of sorts."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] spit-spot.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lana Lang?" Mary asked. "She is in my class."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Quite right, Lana Lang. She mentioned your class when we spoke yesterday. Very pleasant young woman, I expect you'll enjoy having her in your class."

He sipped at his tea. "Would you mind if were awfully nosy for a moment, and asked what made you decide to try your hand at teaching high school?"

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] spit-spot.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I generally work with very young children." Mary said. "I suppose I look on it at something of a challenge. The children here are old enough to have forgotten some things, but are still young enough that they might be potentially reminded of them. I find an environment that encourages such things intriguing."

Re: Meet & Mingle

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"A challenge. I rather think that's a very good way to look at it. A good sort of challenge, of course."

Aziraphale suspected that was part of the reasoning behind his own assignment as well. "The students here are a good lot, despite what must be to them a very strange environment."
