Staff Meeting, Friday (After Classes) [09/12]

Now that the semester was underway, Zoe thought it might be a good idea to start regular meetings back up, and had handwavily informed all the teachers of when and where to be. There was pie, juice, coffee, and tea to keep them there in case they didn't want to stay at first.

"Yah here, more or less. A few years off though." He shrugged in response to the question, "I dunno. Where are you from? And what do you usually fly?"

"I'm from far, far away," Anakin said dryly, "and I fly everything that's loaded into the flight simulator. I prefer the starfighter, but the X-Wings have their advantages, too."

"One of those other dimension things?" he asked. "I checked out the simulator," which was a reminder that he needed to go back there more often, "to see all what was in there. Got some cool stuff. And I have seen one of those X-wings in action. Simulated, of course. Ain't really tried one out myself yet."

"Who did you see flying the X-Wing?" Anakin asked, curious.

"Jaina Solo." No, he didn't know anything about the connection between the two of them. "Good kid."

And he still felt bad for giving her that detention.

"She's almost as good as I am," Anakin said with a nod, "but then, her experience is more recent."

"Really?" Jaina's skill had been good in class, so now he couldn't help but wonder how good Anakin was. "Do you get to fly pretty often? I try to get up there whenever I get the chance."

"My son took the shuttle home with him," Anakin said. "I pop into the simulator when I can, but Jaina needs the time in there more than I do."

"Shuttle?" That sounded space-crafty to him. "The simulator is good, but I prefer the real thing. Choppers usually." And he was about overdue for a good run.

"I'm not exactly on the short list for getting to snag a military grade starfighter," Anakin replied, "and the planes on this planet are too slow."

"Well, I can't say much for starfighters," he made little airquotes, "but I can manage a decent bird when I need one." Not necessarily in a legal fashion, but he could.

"Hey! I think they do quite fine. Just 'cause the tech ain't up to fancy spacecraft yet, don't mean they ain't no good."

Anakin stared at the air quotes with barely contained disgust. "That's what they're called," he said, voice going a little cold. "There's no reason for quote marks like I made it up. And once you've gone lightspeed, Mach 2 isn't exactly enough to blow your hair back."

"Not sayin' you made 'em up. Just applying it as a general term since they don't actually exist where I'm from. Can't fault somebody for somethin' that ain't real."

Though he got that quite a lot, actually.

Jedi in the Temple had learned long ago to step back when they saw the look that was now in Anakin's eyes. Clearly he was choosing to fault Murdock for it.

"So you put all of your general terms in air quotes, then? How do you get through a conversation without people wanting to chop your hands off?"

Okay. Something apparently is tweaked with this guy. And people called him crazy.

"Dude, rather rude don't ya think? I was just pointing out that spacecraft don't exist where I'm from and you're talkin' about choppin' my hands off. And if I sometimes do, what's the issue?"

Because, really. Attitude much?

"Because 'this'," Anakin said, using air quotes to scathing effect, "is frelling 'irritating.' And just because they 'ain't real' where you come from doesn't mean they need to be 'subjected' to this kind of 'treatment'. And you come from here now. I'd expected the wide-eyed astonishment about aliens, space travel, and gremlins from one of the new students. You've been here an entire summer. Get over it."

Anakin had just met the doppelganger of a much loathed future son-in-law. He was having a bad, bad day.

He turned on his heel and stomped to the other side of the room.

Murdock just frowned and went back to his coffee.

So what if he was still impressed by aliens, space travel and spaceships? At least now he knew they were real instead of being ragged on about how crazy he was all the time.
