Staff Meeting, Friday Afternoon (after classes)

The lounge was set up for another faculty meeting, with snacks and pastries and cold drinks and hot drinks and everything moddable between. It was important to cover all the culinary basics when you were dealing with so many different kinds of people.

"Niiiice bitch face," Drake said cheerfully. "I'd give it 8 out of 10 stars. So, gremlins? I've heard of them, but never seen any. What'd they make you do?"

"I thought I was some kind of mad scientist," Anakin said, rolling his eyes. "My grandson thought I tried to set him on fire."

Drake snickered. "It's all fun and games until you set someone on fire," he said. "And I seem to have left my manners in my office. Drake Dèmon, Professor of Literature." He offered his hand.

"Anakin Skywalker," he replied, shaking it. "I teach ethics."

"Keeping the kids on the straight and narrow?" Drake said. "Good on you. I'm thinking of doing 'Love and Romance, Hollywood Style,' next semester, since I think I almost started a riot when I went over Arthurian legend last week in class."

"No one told you about Merlin and Arthur, then?" Anakin guessed with a tiny smile.

"No," Drake said, shaking his head. "But they heard about the class and came to have a Serious Talk with me yesterday. I told them whatever they really did or didn't do, the books are all fiction, just writers interpreting and embellishing the legends. And fortunately there wasn't a d'Artagnan or Athos accosting me after yesterday's class. So what are you covering in ethics? Good, evil, the grey line in between?"

"If they do show up, my wife will be thrilled," Anakin said with a larger smile. "She's an English major. And yes, something like that. This week we covered envy, though most of the students seemed to think that not participating in the activity was going to convince me that they aren't like every teenager ever who secretly hates the person next to them for being taller with better hair."

"We can't all be perfect," Drake sighed, patting his hair (though it should be noted that Anakin towered over him by a whole one and a half inches). "But I get envy. I was envious of humans for years."

"The last name is more of a species description?" Anakin guessed.

"I thought Drake T. Demon was a little too obvious," Drake grinned. "And the accent mark makes it more impressive. But I'm human now, though I've still got my mojo. Made a deal, got turned into a real boy. Voila!"

"Like that puppet in the cartoon?" Anakin replied. "With the singing bug?"

Drake snapped his fingers and conjured up a cricket in his hand. The cricket chirped. "What's that, buddy?" Drake said, bending his head to listen. "You're too busy, you've got a gig in Times Square? No problem, go follow your dream." He snapped his fingers again and vanished the cricket. "Guess I'll have to be my own conscience," he said to Anakin.

Drake put on a pouty face. "I was going for cute and adorable," he said. "But come to think of it, that act never went over well in the Underworld, either."

"Bugs are generally not huge hits?" Anakin offered weakly.

"Underworld is full of bugs," Drake said. "But the Source didn't have much of a sense of humor when you release a swarm of them in his private chambers. During mating season. Not that I know anyone who would've done anything like that."

"Nah, don't feel bad for him," Drake said. "He was one of those evil type demons. Source of All and all. And even if he wasn't, he deserved it for those ridiculous red wings he used to insist on wearing."

Anakin blinked. "Did he have a matching red head, by any chance?" he asked, thinking back forever ago to a day Bel had been stuck looking like a cheap Darth Maul knockoff.

Bel surely would've insisted that Darth Maul was a cheap Bel knockoff, thank you very much.

"Wing boy didn't like to show his face," Drake said. "Half of it got all scarred in the fighting after he claimed the title of the Source. He got a lot better looking when he jumped into the body of my BFF, but at the expense of said BFF, unfortunately."

Anakin would have countered that they were both jackasses, so the point was probably moot.

He winced almost sympathetically. "No cloning technology available in your world? It's how we dealt with bodies that were unusable."

If by "we" you only meant "the Emperor," since the breathing suit had hardly been a fashion choice for Anakin.

Drake...probably would have agreed. Both about the jackasses and the dubious fashion of the breathing suit, but he would've given a thumbs up to the creepy and ominous factor.

"No cloning, just magic," Drake said. "The Source, party pooper that he is, is an eternal mantle of power that hops from body to body if he gets his ass vanquished. There needs to be a magical or blood connection, so I think right now he's floating around and sulking, which is good at least."
