Faculty Party - Friday Afternoon

Lorelai was grateful that Bucky took a nap for part of the morning. It gave her plenty of time to transport food from the diner to the teacher's lounge.

She got everything set up and even decorated the lounge so it would be a little more festive. Since it's Lorelai, that means she hung up some balloons and streamers and covered everything with glitter.

Everything was ready in plenty of time and she was sitting on one of the couches giving Bucky a bottle, waiting for people to start showing up.

With her cup of coffee in-hand, Roslin hovered around the periphery, watching and taking note of the various personalities in the room.

"Hi, I don't think we've met." Abby smiled and held out her hand. "Abby Sciuto, computers."

Laura took her hand and shook it with a reserved smile. "Laura Roslin, interstellar relations. A pleasure to meet you, Abby."

"Interstellar relations?" Abby questioned. "That is definitely not a class I had in college. Is like politics between planets?"

"Something like that. The closest analogy might be international relations on a galactic scale."

"I'm just guessing on this, but you're not from around here, are you?"

Laura chuckled. "No, I'm not -- though our history suggests we descended from the same ancestors. It's one of the reasons I'm here, actually. To see what life on Earth is all about."

"That's very interesting. I wonder how you compare to us at the celluar level?" Abby thought aloud.

"I hate to tell you this, but Fandom Island isn't the most representative slice of Earth. Normal Earth life is...much weirder."

At this, she raised her brows. "Wierder? Is that possible? While I haven't been off the island yet, I gathered that demons, vampires, witches, and zombies weren't exactly commonplace beyond here. They're certainly the things of legend at home."

"Good afternoon, I don't believe we've met. I'm Mary Poppins, I teach Cross Species Communications."

Laura nodded. "A pleasure to meet you, Miss Poppins. I'm Laura Roslin, currently teaching interstellar relations."

"Oh how lovely. Would that be relations between the stars themselves or the people who live around them?"

If she thought it was a strange question, Roslin didn't show it. "The people who live among them -- or rather, the nations that have been formed among them."

"An excellent class for future leaders I'm certain." Mary nodded.

"I'd like to think so. But, as a schoolteacher, I suppose I'd like all my students to emerge as leaders." She smiled.

Laura sipped her coffee, then nodded. "Most of my life. Even when I wasn't teaching, I was working to improve the system, or working with the teachers' unions. What about you? Have you always been a teacher?"

Aziraphale eventually made his way to where Roslin was standing. He smiled cheerfully at her, noticing that she doing what he'd been himself earlier -- standing back and watching.

"I beg your pardon, my dear, but I don't believe we've met. I'm Aziraphale. And I must assume, since you're here, that you must be one of the other new teachers."

"I am." Laura smiled, extending her hand. "Laura Roslin, interstellar relations."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Roslin." Aziraphale tilted his head at what he assumed must be her class subject. "That sounds like a very useful class for this school. I expect it must quite popular. It's only been a week, I know, but are you enjoying teaching here so far?"

"So far...though it seems it will be a challenge." Her smile shifted a bit rueful. "Which will be easier the sooner I get used to the strangeness of it all."

"Oh yes," Aziraphale smiled sympathetically. "I do understand that. This can seem a very strange place, but I expect you'll find yourself adjusting quickly. In a few weeks, you probably won't even think twice when someone tells the pond turned to coffee or the town was invaded by snow monsters."

He blinked, realizing that maybe he wasn't giving Roslin the best impression of the town. "But that doesn't happen very often. Usually it's just the fascinating mix of people. For instance, I must assume you're either not from the time or the place that I'm familiar with. As I don't think we've quite got to the point of having any interstellar relations."

"So I'm learning. Which is good, because I'd hate to leave the island and tell someone I'm from a long, long time ago galaxy far, far away. I'd likely end up under arrest."

She didn't add that she'd been there and done that recently. And didn't want to do it again.

"Oh, I expect you'd mostly just get funny looks. People are actually quite good at ignoring evidence of things they don't believe in." He smiled, thinking about the sort of reception he'd probably get if he started trying to tell people outside of Fandom about himself.

"So, another planet, then. Or is it even another...er, 'world' altogether?"
